• Listening: This section features four audio recordings with a total of 40 questions. You’ll have 40 minutes to listen and answer, with an additional 10 minutes to transfer answers to the main sheet.

• Reading: Both Academic and General Training modules offer three reading passages with 40 questions. Candidates are given 60 minutes to complete this section.

• Writing:

  • Academic Module: This module comprises two writing tasks (60 minutes total):
    • Task 1: Report writing (analysis of data presented in visuals) – minimum 150 words, recommended time: 20 minutes.
    • Task 2: An argumentative essay on a given topic, with a minimum of 250 words, with a recommended time of 40 minutes.
  • General Training Module: This module also has two writing tasks:
    • Task 1: Write a letter based on a prompt (formal or informal) – minimum 150 words.
    • Task 2: Argumentative essay similar to the Academic Module.

• Speaking: This 11-14 minute face-to-face interview with an examiner is often conducted on a separate day.

  • Part 1: General questions about your background, interests, etc. (4-5 minutes)
  • Part 2: You’ll be given a topic card, one minute to prepare, and then speak for at least one minute. (3-4 minutes)
  • Part 3: A two-way discussion related to the Part 2 topic. (4-5 minutes)

Scoring

The IELTS score ranges from 0 to 9 bands, with each section receiving a band score. University requirements vary, but typically a minimum score of 6.0 bands is needed for undergraduate studies and 6.5 bands for postgraduate programs. Results are available within 15 working days.
